When I graduated with my master’s degree in translating and interpreting I felt like I knew a lot about the technical part of the profession, which, to be fair, I did. Unfortunately, what they didn’t tell me in school was that knowing “how to translate” was a relatively small part of what it takes to become successful as a freelance translator.
The large majority of formal translator training programs out there are very helpful in teaching us the how of translating, but in general, leave us sorely unprepared for entering the marketplace and make a living.
Regardless of whether you decide to work in house, as a freelancer, or to start a company, I have found that there are some fundamental mindset shifts and strategies that are key to achieving professional success as a translator (whatever that means for you).
